Reporting Welfare Fraud
Would you like to report welfare fraud? Please review the contents of this page before making a report. Note: Investigations are conducted at the county level. You have three options for reporting:
- You may contact the appropriate County Agency directly.
- If you prefer, you may call the Welfare Fraud Hotline at 1-800-344-8477 and your information will be recorded and forwarded to the correct county.
- You may also contact the Hotline by email at: FraudHotline@dss.ca.gov
What are the most common types of welfare fraud?
- Absent Parent in the home
- Unreported income
- Ineligible child(ren)
- Child(ren) not living in the home
What welfare fraud information should be on the report?
- You should provide the first name, last name, and approximate age of the person you are reporting
- Include the same information of everyone else living in the home especially the child(ren)
- A county representative needs to know the city where the client lives
- Also provide the time of day each person, especially the client, can be found in the home
You may be asked by a county representative if you have knowledge of:
- If work income is not reported or misrepresented
- Client uses someone else’s name for receiving assistance
