  • Capacity Building Grants to Strengthen Non-Profits
    The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced $50 million in grant funding is now available through the Strengthening Communities Fund, a new fund created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. HHS will grant two-year awards of up to $1 million to strengthen nonprofit and faith-based organizations that aid struggling families and communities in the economic downturn. Grantees must provide at least 20 percent of the total approved cost of the project from non-federal funds. For more information, visit the HHS/ACF funding web page. The Office of Community Services (OCS) will hold a pre-application teleconference. For information on the day and time, visit the OCS web site and click on “Strengthening Community Fund.” Deadline is July 7, 2009.
  • Revised FY 2009 Refugee Emergency Housing Assistance Funding
    The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration is providing refugee emergency housing assistance (REHA) to assist the most vulnerable refugees that have extreme unmet housing needs in paying rent and other associated housing costs during their first 90 days in the U.S. For more information on this funding opportunity visit the bureau's web site or Grants.gov . Proposals must be submitted through Grants.gov.
  • U.S. Secretary of Labor Announces the Award of $10 million in Grants to Train Workers in the Energy Industry:
    U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced the awarding of $10 million to fund 11 projects that will provide potential workers with skills-based job training to enter careers in the energy industry. More information on this grant award and a list of grantees .
  • New Federal Citizenship Funding
    The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently announced a $1.2 million competitive grant program to support citizenship preparation programs that help legal permanent residents improve English language skills, gain knowledge of U.S. history and government (civics), and prepare for the naturalization application and interview process. To help interested nonprofits prepare their applications, GCIR has put together an online resource page . Note that the letter of intent is due April 15, 2009, and the full application due May 15, 2009.

  • E Pluribus Unum Prizes
    The Migration Policy Institute's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy is launching the E Pluribus Unum Prizes program. This new national awards program will provide four $50,000 awards annually to exceptional initiatives that promote immigrant integration. The J.M. Kaplan Fund is generously providing support for these awards in each of the next three years to focus attention on successful integration initiatives, and to inspire and provide program models to others around the United States who might also undertake such efforts. The awards recognize outstanding immigrant integration initiatives of all types, whether led by nonprofit or community organizations, businesses, public agencies, religious groups, or individuals.   • Rescue & Restore Victims of Human Trafficking Regional Program Grant Announcement:
    The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration for Children and Families (ACF) has announced a grant opportunity, the “Rescue & Restore Victims of Human Trafficking Regional Program.” Letters of intent are due November 19, 2008 and the applications are due December 22, 2008 . Building on the work of the HHS Rescue & Restore Victims of Human Trafficking campaign, which began to establish local anti-trafficking coalitions, the HHS/ACF Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) seeks to continue and expand its efforts through regional grantees that will serve as focal points for an intensification of local outreach to and identification of victims of severe forms of trafficking in persons. ORR seeks to award one cooperative agreement per geographic area for a period of two years.
